TOM HAXBY

TOM HAXBY

After 26 years as a professional forester and natural resource manager in Florida and Michigan I have started my second career as a freelance photographer. I currently reside near Traverse City, Michigan. I am a member of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) and have participated in numerous professional photo workshops and photo events including workshops with some of the biggest names in the photographic business. My photographs have been in magazines including two magazine covers, books, calendars and other printed media. I also sell photos at art shows and through art galleries.  I have won numerous awards for my photography including several photos in the top 250 in the annual photo competition with NANPA.

As a retired forester, my subject material is the outdoors, and my most photographed subject is probably trees. However, my work is not limited to trees and many of my favorite or most popular photos have been of other subjects.  Most of my photographs are taken in Michigan, however there are other locations such as the Great Smoky Mountains and places throughout the country that I frequent. It is my intention to show nature as artistically and as naturally as possible with minimal computer manipulation.

My process starts with a high end digital camera and my techniques aim to maximize image quality through the use of high quality lenses, state of the art tripods and other techniques.  As mentioned earlier, my goal is to produce images that mimic what I saw when taking the photograph. Only minimal post-processing is applied to my nature images. Large prints on metal, canvas or traditional photo paper are done by a professional photo lab.Because of the quality of my images, I am capable of producing very large prints on all media.  Framing of prints on archival photo paper is done by a local professional framer in Traverse City, Michigan.
